Blog: How "place" shapes our way of thinking Skip To: Course Menu Skip To: System Navigation .

The place I grew up was a couple of houses. The first one was a big brick house with an acre long yard. The second one is a small house with no yard. The third one is a somewhat small house with a medium-sized yard. I have always lived in the suburbs.  When we moved to the brick house in Richmond I was very young, I can barely remember the houses we lived in before that. I can remember the wide yard and he summer days when we would play outside while our dad mowed the lawn. We always played around the house. When I was in seventh grade we moved to a small house with no yard. It was very different than our old house. When we lived there I had my third surgery on my heart. Last year we moved into my grandma's house. The places I have lived are still expanding today.  Even though we stay inside a lot me and my family are always busy. That busy lifestyle has helped me become more intelligent.

1-2/B- Blog: Watching a Dance

In Smoke Gets in Your Eyes I have a better respect for because of what I learned about dance. I can easily see where the elements of dance fit in. I can see the force of their movements, the time involved, and the space of the area.  Before this I did not have as nearly as much respect

Assignment 4 - Blog Portfolio: A Short Play

The scene of the play is two people with differing opinions on a controversial political issue. The characters are Bill who is a strong Romney supporter and John who is a strong Obama supporter. The two agreed to hash out their concerns in talks to air on a local talk show in which two "average Joes" talk about their opposing views on the economy, taxes or income redistribution, and healthcare.

Bill: My name is Bill and I am a strong Romney supporter.

John: My name is John and I am a strong Obama supporter.

Bill: I am for Romney because we are no better off than we were four years ago.

John: I beg to differ. When Obama took office, the stock market had crashed which hurt everyone's 401ks, etc. and the housing market was completely nearly destroyed. Today, the housing market is recovering slowly and the stock market is doing well even under the regulations put in place by the Obama administration to prevent any future situations.

Bill: Well Obama believes in income redistribution. He believes the wealthy should have to use their hard earned money to pay for other people's poor situation as well as anything other people might not have or need. Taxing the wealthy more is just unfair and causes people to be dependent upon others for their well-being.

John: Every time I hear such things it makes me laugh. The reason for the laughter is that the wealthy do not make their money by their selves. It requires many people to achieve their wealth. These people are not all paid good salaries enough to afford a decent living or their benefits if offered is so poor and cost so much that they cannot afford it either. Also, the customers for most businesses are middle-class or lower income people who are charged enough to make the owners wealthy. In addition, if someone who does not have perfect credit applies for any loan or credit card then they are charged a higher interest rate than those who really do not need the loan in the first place. You see the wealthy believes in income redistribution but in reverse of what Obama believes. They take from those who are poorer than they are and make themselves richer.

Bill: Obamacare! Obamacare! Just another unfair tax on the business community and more government.

John: If the businessman wants someone to work for them then shouldn't those individuals be more than a number. If businesses took more stock in helping their employees to live well, then there would be no need for government to get involved. In fact, that is why Unions were first developed to protect the human resources from unfair business practices. Another thing, health insurance companies are in it to make money and if they discover someone has a disease, etc. then they should not be allowed to terminate the persons policy which not only leaves them responsible for the cost but in many cases could deny them treatment if they need up with no insurance coverage. The hospitals, insurance industry, and the business community should be ashamed of how they have treated their fellow man or woman in the past and under Obamacare maybe that will never happen again.

Bill: Yes, yes, yes. I hear you but the Republican way is the best solution.

John: Obama is a caring president who wants a better life for all of the people. Remember, "For the people, and by the people" includes all Americans for rich or for poorer. Be sure to use your right to vote!

My personal theater experiences

My personal experiences with theater include a couple of plays that I participated in when I was in 2nd grade and Kindergarten, and a play I've saw when I was in middle school. The plays I participated in were small school plays. The first was a Thanksgiving Day play in kindergarten in which I played the King of England as well as a pilgrim. The second play was a Polar Express play in 2nd grade in which I played one of the main characters that learned to believe in the power of Christmas. In the play there was much empathy given to one of the children who lost their ticket for the Polar Express train and the other children tried hard to recover it so that he could journey on to the North Pole to meet Santa. These plays were fun to act in even though I was very young. The only play that I saw was a Beauty and the Beast play when I was in 6th grade. The story followed the well-known saga and climaxed when the Beast gets saved by Bell's love for him which ended the curse on his kingdom. It allowed everyone to see the man inside the beast and it showed that pure love can conquer all. I really enjoyed both acting and watching these plays unfold before my eyes.

"Unit 2: Elements of Music: Assignment 2: Blogging My Experiences."

Music moves me in ways that are difficult to describe. It can bring on a wide range of emotions from happiness to sadness. It can consume you and release you. One of my fondest musical experiences has been Disney's Fantastia movie series. I have watched all of them probably thirty to forty times. It has great animation along with incredible music. It can help anyone envision the music and feel its instruments come alive.
The series highlights many great works by many famous composers. For instant , The Nutcracker Suite by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky as the music changes Disney tried to link the animation to the changes of scale of the work. At the beginning of the music, the tempo is slow and Disney uses graceful sprite-like creatures flying and slowly spreading the morning dew. However, as the music gets close to the end it shows those sprite-like creatures spreading winter ice until all is frozen which demonstrates how the music has reached its climax and is regressing to its end. Displays like these help you visualize how this work changes and creates a mood or feeling to help carry it along.
All in all, Fantastia combines visual stimulation and audial stimulation. Through Disney's animation, it enables people young and old to have a greater appreciation for classical music and their composers. It is timeless since the same works are still revered today.

Building to save energy:

The Monolithic Dome is the green home that I find most interesting. I like the design since I have always liked circles. Their structure keeps in heat and air which makes it very energy efficient. This one-piece structure is designed so well that it is resistant to wind and storm damage. It moves with the ground instead of collapsing during earthquakes and since it is made of concrete and steel then it resist damage from fire, insects and rot. These houses can be cheap to build which makes them very economical.  In fact, in Indonesia after a major earthquake about 70 of these homes were built at $1500 cost for each home. These dome buildings have been used for everything including churches, schools, and commercial buildings.

The Sydney Opera House as designed by Jorn Utzon is located in Sydney, Australia. It engages many architectural principles of design. It has a very dramatic contrast to its surroundings. This contrast makes it stand out of other buildings, but it also is unified in its structural design and it fits quite well in such a nautical location. Its roof seems to resemble part of a ship or maybe the sails on a boat. This dramatic design creates variety to the landscape and harbor of it sites. It is truly one of the most unique and recognizable buildings in the world.

Challenge and Opportunity 1

For this assignment I was challenged to draw a picture using the colors blue and orange. This is my interpretation of a picture using only blue and orange made by paint.

Assignment 1 - A Persuasive Poster

Everyone gets fired up about it! Should smoking be banned in public places? Where do you stand on this issue? What are the most powerful images you can use to get your ideas across?

Choose one side of this argument and develop a colorful drawing or collage that is intended to persuade others to agree with your way of thinking. Your audience consists of people who are neutral on the issue or have an opposite position from yours, so it’s important to get their attention.

Use poster board, drawing paper, or a digital program to create your poster. Remember, the idea is to persuade the viewer by the images you capture or create, not to sway them with words alone. When you are finished, scan the image or take a digital photo of it and save it to your computer. Then go to the next page (it will launch the blog list). Find your blog/portfolio and upload your picture to be graded.

"Unit 1: CPR: Assignment 1- My Experiences with Creating, Performing, and Responding."

I have had some experiences in creating, performing, and responding. I love to draw all the time; however, I have rheumatoid arthritis which makes that difficult sometimes. It feels great to design or create some creature, etc. and to give it life. I used to be in band in middle school. I played the percussion instruments. Of course, that was prior to developing arthritis. I really enjoyed the marching band and concerts that we performed. I also enjoy exposure to different art forms. I like all kinds of jazz music. I like all kinds of movies such as dramas, comedies, science fiction, and of course suspense. I like the way I can think about the plot and characters. It sure creates a response for me since I get so involved in the story. All art forms make me come to life. They inspire me.
